Aims

NYCE aims to provide facilities for education, recreation and cultural development of young people resident in Nailsworth and the surrounding area, and to extend this provision to foster social integration with the wider community.

The following summary of a town meeting held 9th April 2009 gives an idea of the current status and hopes for the building:

  • The committee includes people with wide ranging experience in both the private and public sector and experience with young people in both a professional and voluntary capacity. All live in Nailsworth.
  • A detailed structural survey of the building has been commissioned and a strategy for refurbishment has been developed. Some work has already been completed (the main window) and other work is in the pipeline. Unfortunately a key element of the Business Plan, namely a building apprenticeship venture, can no longer be implemented as the partner in this project has pulled out in favour of another scheme. The Business Plan is being rewritten as a result.
  • The committee has no intention to re-form a youth club or compete with The Junction Club but rather to supplement existing provision for young people and also the wider community.
  • Parking spaces in front of the building have been rented out to local people. In addition the committee has put in place the necessary policies and procedures so that it can hire out the building for events and so create an income stream.
  • The large space that the building offers and in particular the Main Hall has resulted in some interesting projects being held recently: these include Fairgame’s Stand and Stare theatre project and Transformation project, art (ARK) and sculpture exhibitions and a printing exhibition from IMPRESS. Good press coverage as a result.
  • Badminton is being restarted and there has been interest from other recreational groups
  • The tennis club lease expires in January 2010 and discussion on the renewal of the lease is on-going. NYCE is keen for tennis to continue on its site.
  • The committee has been invited to bid for part of a recent bequest and if successful the money would be spent on improving the toilet and kitchen facilities and buying curtains for the main hall.
  • The committee organised an Open Day on Saturday 25 April 2009 10.30am-4.30pm as part of the Nailsworth Festival. The long and distinguished history of the building was explained using material from the Nailsworth and Gloucester Archives. Visitors had have the opportunity to become members of NYCE and hence help to shape future policy.
  • The NYCE committee is very pleased that it’s bringing life back into the building and welcomes local support.
