Opening of new Glass Canopy at the Nailsworth Subscription Rooms.

The Nailsworth Subscription Rooms are proud to announce the opening of their beautiful new glass and wood canopy and entrance area at the front of the building in Bath Road, Nailsworth.

Thanks largely to a £10,000 grant from The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust the double-glazed canopy and a wood and glass wall with double doors, have now been completed. As well as improving the appearance, this project has improved the energy conservation of that part of the building, securing the opening against weather, and improving security.

The new porch and its surrounds will ‘tie the building together’ as its design has been made to match the new doors and slope of the roof of the workshop situated on the left hand side of the building. An official opening is planned for early autumn.

Les Haines, one of a group of Trustees of Nailsworth Youth and Community Enterprise who run the building on behalf of the community said, “ This is the second time in recent years that The Gloucestershire Evironmental Environmental Trust has willingly stepped in to help fund our major renovation and modernisation programme. The old front entrance area was unsightly and spoiled the look of our landmark building. Now we have something to be proud of and it has already led to many favourable comments from visitors and passers-by.”

Access for the disabled has also been improved recently. Internal access to the Community Workshop, which occupies the lower ground floor, now has a wheel chair ramp and also a stair lift to the closest toilet. The access path to the main activity hall has been totally reconstructed with new tarmac surfacing to the whole area and there are now dedicated parking bays for disabled users.

This new build is part of a project to modernise the Subscription Rooms, making them fit for purpose and aiming to provide facilities for education, in particular but not exclusively for young people resident in Nailsworth and the surrounding area.  After consultation with the community, the Nailsworth Youth and Community Enterprise now have space available for a range of activities including; table tennis, yoga, circus skills, badminton, musical events, dances, harp orchestra and exhibitions. The Community Workshops held here are very popular and include ‘men’s shed’, upholstery, English longbow-making, wood production workshops, wood, stained glass and leatherwork classes and courses. Sessions for home educated children also occur twice a week.

The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust provides grants from funds generated by the Landfill Communities Fund for the benefit of Gloucestershire, its people and its environment. The Trust receives funds provided by the Cory Environmental (Gloucestershire) Ltd, which owns and manages the waste management operations in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Cirencester.

Over 700 projects have been funded since the Trust began, and more than £12.5 million has been distributed to worthwhile projects across good causes covering the maintenance and repair of public amenities, the provision of open spaces, the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment and the restoration, preservation and repair of buildings of historical importance and architectural value.
